Childhood obesity raising its hood in HK
Anupam Agnihotri | May 29 2007

Toughest challenge before the Hong Kong government is perhaps going to be from health side, as the crisis of childhood obesity emerges at an alarming rate in this country. A news report attracted attention to this side after revealing that in the past 13 years, obesity among kids has almost doubled.

How badly the situation is going beyond control could be understood from the fact that where childhood obesity was 8.9 and 11.3 percent among boys and girls respectively in 1993, while now these figures have gone up to 22.5 and 16.8 per cent among boys and girls respectively.

Actually, there are many reasons responsible for this much of rise in childhood obesity, in which fast growing physical inactivity, increase in the amount of time being spent on the internet and computer games are mainly to be blamed. Therefore, in order to bring down the swelling tide of obesity, which is fast engulfing kids not only in Hong Kong but also around the globe, we shall have to bring some radical changes in the life routine of kids, by giving due importance to outdoor activities, restricted TV viewing and by promoting good eating habits among them.
